Top Ten Book Recommended to Me

Simon Vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli Goodreads | Amazon  I read this because I saw a review of it by Gillian at Writer of Wrongs.  My love for this book will not die and everyone is just going to have to get on board with that.  



The Tyranny of Petticoats: 15 Stories of Belles, Bank Robbers & Other Badass Girls  Goodreads | Amazon I put the full title here because it is amazing. My friend Gabrielle recommended this one.  She is a librarian.  We were having this whole discussion about feminism, history, and diversity and she mentioned this book.  Always read the books that Gabrielle recommends.


Breaking Stalin's Nose by Eugene Yelchin Goodreads | Amazon Gabrielle again. I have a fascination with the former USSR and she ordered this book special for me when she saw it.  This is how I know that we are friends for life. It is the story of one day in a boys life where he starts to question the world around him.


Orchards by Holly Thompson Goodreads | Amazon I was teaching a Language &Literature class with my friend Wendy and she was reading this during silent reading one day.  It is a novel in verse about a Jewish Japanese girl who is sent to visit her family in Japan for the summer.  


Endangered by Eliot Schrefer
Goodreads | Amazon  My  Friend Mary brought this up at our Middle School book club as the book that she was reading. It takes place in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.  It is incredibly realistic and well researched.  


The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson
Goodreads | Amazon Amazon recommended this to me.  I don't know what I had bought that would have lead them to think that I would like this book.  I bought a kindle copy of this right before I was flying from Mongolia to the States for Christmas and I finished it somewhere over the Pacific.  By the time I got to the US I was so desperate for someone to talk about this book with that I went to Target on December 23 just to buy a hardcopy for my mother.  Which I forced on her that same day.  I didn't even pretend that it was a Christmas present.  Beware: this book is graphic beyond all reason.

Goodreads | Amazon This was a Panda Awards book that I saw on display at the library.  What I really enjoyed was the exploration of how being gifted doesn't necessarily make life easier.




One for the Murphys by Lynda Mullaly Hunt
Goodreads| Amazon Amazon again.  One of the best MG novels that I have ever read. I tear up just thinking about it.




The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
Goodreads | Amazon Amazon.  I think I got this on my kindle the day it came out and was completely oblivious to the hype around it until the first movie came out.  I was young and sheltered then. Also, if I remember correctly I had no internet connection at home and was living in the bush of Alaska.
Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephanson
Goodreads | Amazon    My husband nagged me for literally years to years this book. I don't even know how to describe it.  Math and computer science but entertaining?  I am still impressed that he read it in his second language.  

This list has made me realize how closely I associate books with where I was when I was reading them.  Does anyone else do that?
